BYRON — Freshman Clayton Phillips (New London, Iowa/New London) posted the lowest individual score in the second round of the Sauk Valley Invite on Thursday, highlighting a fifth-place finish for the Carl Sandburg College men’s golf team at the two-day tournament.
Phillips finished Thursday’s second round at PrairieView with a 2-over-par 74 for the best round of the day in the 59-player field. Phillips shot even par on the back nine and finished the tournament tied for 11th with a total of 155.
The Chargers shot 319 in Wednesday’s first round at Deer Valley and a 324 on Thursday for a total score of 643. Sandburg finished nine shots back of Highland for fourth place and 16 in front of sixth-place Sauk Valley. Bryant & Stratton won the tournament with a 615.
Sandburg sophomores Calvin Peterson (Williamsfield, Ill./Williamsfield) and Cole Hopping (Vermont, Ill./VIT) tied for 16th at 163.
Bryant & Stratton’s Trey Fulmer took medalist honors with a 146 for the tournament, highlighted by a 3-under 69 in the first round.
